Ethnicity and Attitudes and language Security of Non- standard Varieties of Iranian Language Speakers in Tehran

چکیده

This study investigates the speakers’attitudes and their language security considering ethnic identities towards the framework of the lectal variation theory. A researcher-constructed survey questionnaire and interview were used in this study. Linguistic data were collected from 314 participants selected semi-randomly from among the language community of immigrants living in Tehran with ten different varieties of Iranian languages. The Likert scale was used to measure the questionnaire items. Cronbach’s alpha was used to measure the reliability. Besides, the Chi-square test was used to receive statistical results. In terms of language attitudes, speakers of languages have the sense of proud, sincerity, belonging, sense of being more melodious and real identity, however the speakers of dialects have the sense of proud toward standard variety of Iranian language. In terms of language security, Laki’s speakers shows the most and Mazandarani’s speakers shows the least measure in the home environment and out of home environment. In terms of language identity, in languages, Laki’s speakers and in dialects, Hamedani’s speakers demonstrated the most sense of language identity toward their non-standard varieties of Iranian languages.
