Field Testing of a Jeepney-Mounted Micro WECS for Battery Charging Applications in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

A new application of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) was explored in this study. A prior laboratory test identified the optimal turbine design for the micro WECS, which featured an 80 cm turbine diameter and a 7.1 cm blade chord length. This design was mounted on the roof of a passenger jeepney for a lead-acid battery charging application. Field testing was conducted in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, along the jeepney route from Brgy. Malvar, Naujan to Calapan City proper and back. On average, one car battery could be fully recharged over three round trips, while two motorcycle batteries could be recharged during a single round trip. The alternator’s power output, which initiated battery charging, ranged from 24 to 460 W and occurred during 60 to 71% of the total travel time of the passenger jeepney. Economic analysis indicated that the system was financially viable, with a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 1.14, a payback period of 3.25 years, and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 40.02%. Exit interviews revealed strong public support for the jeepney-mounted micro WECS. Adoption of this system could result in an annual savings of 823.68 kWh of electricity and a net avoided greenhouse gas emission of 303 kgCO₂eq per year.
