The properties of poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA), a stable and linear polymer, make it highly suitable for functionalization by nucleophilic compounds. This feature has expanded the application of PSMA in the efficient treatment of pollution. Recent advancements have led to the synthesis of new materials based on PSMA, coupled with other materials, which have demonstrated the effective removal of various contaminants from water solutions. This review article discusses the most recent findings regarding the effectiveness of SMA-based materials in removing various metal ions from aqueous solutions. The emphasis is on the key factors influencing adsorption performance, such as contact time, temperature, metal ion concentration, pH values, and the presence of disturbing metal ions. This research further investigates the desorption and regeneration processes, the interactions between metal and SMA-based materials, and the design and production of SMA-based materials used in environmental pollution management. Moreover, SMA-derived adsorbents can have high environmental benefits due to their biocompatibility, stability, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, and also may pave the way for synthesis of SMA-based materials with improved adsorbent performance for purifying water from heavy metal ions.
