چکیده

Abstract Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of curcumin supplementation on levels of inflammatory factors in fencer males. Methods : The present study was a semi-experimental and practical research study with a sample of 21 male fencers. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: curcumin supplement consumption (C) (11 subjects, BMI = 23.3 ± 1.74 kg.m⁻²) and a placebo group (P) (10 subjects, BMI = 23.78 ± 2.18 kg.m⁻²). Blood samples were drawn before, after 8 weeks, immediately after the competitions, and 24 hours later. One curcumin capsule (80 nanomicelles) was given to group C, after the breakfast, and one placebo capsule to group P. Both groups performed their regular fencing training sessions on three non-consecutive days per week, with each session lasting two hours. ANOVA with repeated measures analysis was used to assess changes in variables at the significant level p < 0.05. Results : 8 weeks of regular curcumin supplement consumption in group C resulted in a lower increase in levels of TNF-α (p=0.021) and IL-1β (p=0.017) in comparison with the P group immediately after fencing competitions and a lower increase in TNF-α (p=0.011) levels 24 hours later. There was no significant difference in the concentration of IL-6 (p>0.05) between the two groups. Conclusion : Reducing inflammation caused by curcumin consumption is a useful way to improve muscle inflammation faster. This could be very important for fencers and coaches in the final moments of a tough and overwhelming tournaments that the body faces with high oxidative stress. Keywords : fencing, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, curcumin.
