چکیده

The victory of the Islamic Revolution in the late 1970s led to a renewed interest in historical educational traditions and a re-examination of the perspectives of Muslim educators within academic circles of the Iranian field of education. Building upon this renewed reading, the present study aims to examine the foundations of moral education according to Imam Ghazali and Molla Ahmad Naraqi, with an emphasis on the cultivation of the self. The findings indicate that Ghazali, by emphasizing the composite nature of the human self, proposes strategies such as the necessity of safeguarding the self, ensuring the clarity of self, maintaining deliberateness and consistency of the self, acknowledging the responsibility of self, promoting the integration of reason and self, and facilitating the teachability of the self. Ghazali draws upon rational argumentation from Sharia, mysticism, and ethical counsel to guide the cultivation of the self. Naraqi assigns extraordinary importance to self-cultivation, referring to it as "spiritual medicine". Both thinkers emphasize the composite structure of the self, the necessity of understanding it, its developmental potential, and its capacity for education and cultivation. It is recommended that educational philosophers in Iran pay systematic attention to the issue of educating the composite self and strive to introduce its multiple dimensions to learners through specialized workshops and educational initiatives.
