A Comparative Study of Teacher Education Systems of Iran and South Korea with an Emphasis on Recruitment and Training Process

Studying teacher education system in various countries and taking advantage of their experiences can influence teacher’s professional development. The aim of the present study is to compare teacher education system of Iran and South Korea. Research method is qualitative comparative and the strategy of selecting countries -Iran and South Korea- was “differences in social systems and similarities in the output of the educational systems”. To collect data, documentary method has been utilized and international and Iran’s information databases were used to find sources. Data analysis is done based on Bereday’s model. The findings indicate that attention to professional and general qualifications for recruiting teachers, using centers and universities specialized for teacher education, and the content of curriculum are similar in both systems. As far as the standards and qualifications required to get accepted in teacher education centers, the process of issuing a license or professional activity certificate to teachers, and the strategies and methods used for in-service training are concerned, these systems are fundamentally different from each other. According to the research findings, the authorities of teacher education in Iran are suggested to review the qualifications and competencies required to be recruited in teacher education universities. They are also suggested to plan the process of recruiting and issuing professional activity certificates in the form of level one and level two certificates.
