Effects of Filamentous Cyanobacterial Allelopathy on Phytoplankton Community in Miankaleh Wetland, North of Iran

This study investigated the effects ofmonocultures of three dominant cyanobacterialspecies Nostoc spongiaeforme C.Agardh ex Bornet & Flahault, Anabaenavaginicola F.E. Fritsch & Rich and oscillatorialimosa C. Agardh ex Gomont on abrackish water phytoplankton community inMiankaleh international wetland and peninsula,north of Iran. We compared the chlorophylla concentration and cell numbersafter treatment. As a result, among three cyanobacterialspecies, N. spongiaeforme hadmost allelopathic effects on phytoplanktoncommunity whereas O. limosa and A. vaginicolashowed no noticeable effects. Theeffects of N. spongiaeforme on phytoplanktoncommunity could be divided into twotypes: Strong negative effects and positiveeffects.
