چکیده

Metal Alloys have a vital role in many technological and industrial applications; however, the vulnerability of alloys to corrosion inevitably has disruptive issues on huge economic losses and catastrophes. In this study, the green method was used to obtain an eco-friendly coating of a silica xerogel by various acidic and basic catalysts. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as a precursor and organic solvent was then applied to carbon steel via the dip-coating method. Prepared coated specimens were characterized with infrared spectroscopy analysis by fourier transform (FT-IR), X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy in type of electrone microscopy (FE-SEM), Optical Microscope (OM), and gravimetric analysis. The corrosion rate was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance. This research was conducted to achieve the optimized parameters for an efficient corrosion protective coating, herein by comparison of the results, we concluded the 100-200 percent improvement of corrosion resistance against bare specimens for the same period of immersion in NaCl solution. The specimens with optimized parameters presented the ascending corrosion resistance from 0.274 mm/yr to 0.124 mm/yr which confirmed the suitability of the protective coating for relative applications.
