Effect of Titanium Nitride Coating on Orthodontic Brackets on Streptococcus mutans Biofilm: An In Vitro Study

چکیده

Aim: Demineralization due to biofilm accumulation in the vicinity of brackets is one of the limitations of fixed orthodontic treatments. The excellent biocompatibility of titanium nitride (TiN) has been well-established in various medical applications. This study aimed to determine the effect of coating orthodontic brackets with TiN on the formation of Streptococcus mutans (Streptococcus mutans) biofilms in a laboratory environment.Methods: Forty-five samples of stainless steel upper first premolar brackets were coated with TiN by chemical deposition. The samples were then subjected to antimicrobial tests with Streptococcus mutans and evaluated at intervals of 0, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 days. Data was analyzed by T- test and the significance level was set at P<0.05.Results: The colony counts in the control group were higher than in the titanium nitride-coated group at different time intervals, with the difference between them increasing with time. According to the results of the t-test, on all days except the first moment after placing the samples in saliva, the Streptococcus mutans colony counts in the titanium nitride-coated group were significantly lower than in the control group.Conclusion: According to the results, titanium nitride coating on orthodontic brackets has anti-biofilm properties against Streptococcus mutans and can prevent demineralization and dental caries during orthodontic treatment.
