A Novel Epidemic-Inspired Routing Protocol for Internet of Vehicles Leveraging the Covid-19 Spread Model

In vehicular Internet of Things (IoT) networks, which are characterized by low-quality wireless links, unstable topology, and severe resource constraints, the rise of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) as a key subdomain of the IoT has brought profound improvement in the safety and efficiency of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Nevertheless, the integration of heterogeneous devices and applications within IoV networks, along with the existence of subpar wireless connections, unstable network topologies, and significant resource limitations, has made the assurance of Quality of Service (QoS) a significant challenge. In contrast to other IoT domains that generally function within static and regulated settings, IoV networks face intricate, dynamic, and highly fluctuating conditions, necessitating tailored strategies for routing and safety administration. Routing and data transmission are the most crucial factors in ensuring QoS within an IoV-based intelligent transportation system. In fact, an IoV routing protocol, if it is not capable of assuring optimal QoS, will definitely result in inferior service delivery. This paper proposes a new IoV routing protocol based on the coronavirus propagation model as a paradigm to optimize QoS parameters, especially end-to-end delay. Motivated by the rapid spreading characteristics of the COVID-19 virus, especially the way the virus is spread from an infected individual to a susceptible one via super-spreading Cough, we propose a mechanism for fast information dissemination in the network that effectively reduces the transmission delays. In this model, the routing information is shared between vehicles at high speed and with the minimum possible number of hops, which will seriously enhance the efficiency of the IoV network by reducing delay and increasing packet delivery rates.
