Nonlinear and Spatial Effects of Urbanization on Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Iranian Provinces: Spatial Econometrics

According to many researchers, urbanization is one of the important factors affecting the emission of air pollutants. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of urbanization on carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption in 31 provinces of Iran during the period 2011-2021. Despite numerous studies on the effect of urbanization on carbon dioxide emissions, nonlinear effects and spatial spillover effects have been considered in few studies. For this reason, a spatial econometric model has been used in this paper to calculate indirect (spatial) effects along with direct effects. The findings show that carbon dioxide emissions in different regions of Iran have a positive and significant spatial correlation. An examination of the linear and nonlinear coefficients of urbanization on carbon dioxide emissions showed that the relationship between urbanization and carbon dioxide emissions is in the form of a curve. Also, gross domestic product per capita, energy consumption per capita, and population had a positive and significant intra-regional effect on carbon dioxide emissions. The spatial and inter-regional effects of these variables were also significant.
