Nonlinear and Spatial Effects of Urbanization on Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Iranian Provinces: Spatial Econometrics

According to many researchers, urbanization is one of the important factors affecting the ‎emission of air pollutants. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect ‎of urbanization on carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption in 31 provinces of Iran ‎during the period 2011-2021. Despite numerous studies on the effect of urbanization on ‎carbon dioxide emissions, nonlinear effects and spatial spillover effects have been considered ‎in few studies. For this reason, a spatial econometric model has been used in this paper to ‎calculate indirect (spatial) effects along with direct effects. The findings show that carbon ‎dioxide emissions in different regions of Iran have a positive and significant spatial ‎correlation. An examination of the linear and nonlinear coefficients of urbanization on carbon ‎dioxide emissions showed that the relationship between urbanization and carbon dioxide ‎emissions is in the form of a curve. Also, gross domestic product per capita, energy ‎consumption per capita, and population had a positive and significant intra-regional effect on ‎carbon dioxide emissions. The spatial and inter-regional effects of these variables were also ‎significant.‎
