The relationship between telemedicine and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) management the Kurdistan region of Iraq

Background and Objective: Telemedicine can make possible the provision of medical services and result in a positive patient-provider relationship while also bridging physical and temporal gaps. This study aims to determine the relationship between telemedicine and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) management provided in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Method: A descriptive-analytical study was conducted throughout 2023 among diabetic patients attending medical healthcare centers in Khanaqin City. Sampling was comprehensive and accessible, with patient selection adhering to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection was performed using two questionnaires that focused on demographic and clinical characteristics, and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) for hypertension. A significance level of less than 0.05 was considered. Result: The mean age of the patients was 49.55 ± 5.23 years, with a mean BMI of 25.21 ± 2.44 kg/m2. Following telemedicine intervention, significant improvements were observed in the mean levels of FBS, HbA1c, cholesterol, and Triglyceride. Medication adherence among diabetic patients revealed that in the Pre-telemedicine phase, drug adherence was low in 55 (44%) patients, moderate in 60 (48%) patients, and high in 10 (8%) patients; whereas in the post-telemedicine phase, drug adherence was low in 12 (9.6%) patients, moderate in 35 (28%) patients, and high in 78 (62.4%) patients. These changes in medication adherence between the Pre-telemedicine and post-telemedicine phases were statistically significant (P≤0.001). Conclusion: The study results demonstrated that telemedicine significantly improved diabetes care by reducing blood sugar levels, increasing medication adherence, and thus, enhancing disease control.
