Integrating Tumor Genetics into Radiotherapy Planning for Prostate Cancer: The Path to Precision Oncology

Radiotherapy is a valuable treatment option for a variety of cancers, including prostate cancer. As indications for radiotherapy for diseases continue to change, it is important to consider the risks and how they affect the benefits of treatment. The advent of genomics has revolutionized our understanding of the genetic structure of the tumor and its response to radiation therapy in prostate cancer Germline single nucleotide polymorphisms, somatic mutations, gene expression phenotypes, and immune microenvironment in tumor and normal tissues can predict tumor response and toxicity after prostate cancer radiotherapy. Differences in response to treatment and side effects after treatment cannot be fully explained by treatment dose alone. This study examines the role of genetic differences in how patients respond to radiotherapy.
