Efficacy Comparison of Zea Mays and Tamsulosin in Alleviating Pain and Facilitating the Passage of Renal and Ureteral Stones Measuring 4-10 Millimeters

Introduction: Given the high incidence of urinary stones and their associated complications, along with the diuretic properties of Zea mays, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Zea mays in facilitating the passage of kidney and ureteral stones in comparison to tamsulosin.Methods: This randomized clinical trial involved 80 participants aged over 18 years with renal and ureteral stones ranging from 4 to 10 millimeters. After obtaining informed consent and ethical approval, participants were divided into two groups. In Group 1, following ultrasonography to confirm stone presence, Zea mays sourced from Yasuj city was prepared, dried in the shade, and encapsulated. Participants were instructed to take one capsule every 12 hours for two weeks. In Group 2 (the control group), participants received one capsule of tamsulosin (0.4 mg) nightly for the same duration. After two weeks, follow-up visits were conducted, KUB sonography was performed to assess stone size and residual presence, and pain severity was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21 and appropriate statistical tests.Results: No significant differences were found between the two groups concerning mean age (P-value=0.799), gender (P-value=0.559), mean stone size (P-value=0.095), number of stones (P-value=0.473), and pain levels (P-value=0.360). Within-group comparisons revealed a significant decrease in the number of stones (P-value=0.000), pain levels (P-value=0.05), and mean stone size (P-value=0.000) for both groups. Post-intervention efficacy indicated that in the tamsulosin group, 17.5% achieved complete stone passage and 32.5% had partial success. In contrast, the Zea mays group reported a 25% complete response and a 27.5% relative response.Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that both Zea mays and tamsulosin are effective in reducing the size and quantity of renal and ureteral stones, as well as alleviating pain during the expulsion process. However, no significant differences were observed between the two treatments.
