Mitochondrial Odyssey: From Free-Living Bacteria to Kidney-Saving Cellular Nomads

Recent discoveries reveal that mitochondria-onece known for its metabolic and OXPHOS activity- can transfer between cells through multiple pathways. This intercellular migration serves diverse functions. In kidney medicine, mitochondrial transplantation shows remarkable promise for ameliorating delayed graft function and acute kidney injury caused by ischemic reperfusion injury, cardiac arrest, and other post operational conditions such as sirs. Clinical applications demonstrate that transplanted mitochondria can integrate into renal tubular cells, reduce inflammation, and protect against transplant-related damage. While many challenges remain in mitochondrial preservation and optimal delivery methods, this therapeutic approach have the potential to enhance treatment of kidney diseases and expand viable organ donor pools.
