The advent of nanotechnology has profoundly impacted the field of restorative dentistry, particularly through the development of nanotechnology-enhanced dental composites. This review provides a comprehensive overview of traditional dental composites, their limitations, and the transformative role that nanomaterials play in overcoming these challenges. By incorporating nanoparticles such as silica, nano-hydroxyapatite, and zirconia, dental composites exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties, enhanced aesthetics, reduced polymerization shrinkage, and added bioactive and antibacterial functionalities. Clinical and laboratory studies demonstrate the superior durability, wear resistance, and marginal integrity of nanocomposites, contributing to longer-lasting restorations and improved patient outcomes. Safety and biocompatibility considerations are also addressed, affirming the clinical viability of these advanced materials. Despite some technical and economic challenges, ongoing research and innovation continue to expand the potential of nanocomposites, including the development of smart and multifunctional restorative materials. This review underscores the promise of nanotechnology to revolutionize dental restorative practices and highlights the need for continued investigation to fully realize its benefits in personalized and regenerative dental care.
