CubeSats, miniature satellites forming the backbone of many modern space communication constellations, have enabled affordable and flexible space-based connectivity. However, their rapid proliferation in satellite communication (SATCOM) networks and integration with terrestrial 5G/6G infrastructure have introduced significant cybersecurity challenges. In particular, the broadcast nature of satellite links makes CubeSat communications inherently vulnerable to spoofing attacks, which compromise signal authenticity, and eavesdropping attacks, which threaten data confidentiality. These risks are amplified by CubeSats’ reliance on commercial off-the-shelf components and their strict limitations in power, computation, and bandwidth. This article presents a comprehensive review of CubeSat security in SATCOM networks, with a focus on spoofing and eavesdropping threats. We examine key attack modalities and survey state-of-the-art detection and mitigation techniques, including angle-of-arrival analysis, Doppler shift monitoring, machine learning–based intrusion detection, cryptographic authentication, physical-layer security, artificial noise injection, quantum key distribution, and post-quantum cryptography. Practical engineering considerations for deploying these mechanisms on resource-constrained CubeSat platforms are discussed. Furthermore, we propose a multilayer security framework tailored to CubeSat networks that integrates physical-layer hardening, lightweight encryption, and AI-driven monitoring. Finally, future research directions are outlined, emphasizing quantum-resilient cryptography, cross-layer security strategies, and standardized cybersecurity practices to enhance the resilience of next-generation CubeSat-enabled SATCOM services.
