Probiotics are a safe and effective way to improve gut health and overall well-being, as the microbiota plays a crucial role in human nutrition, immunology, and physiological functions. In light of the increased awareness created by recent scientific studies, consumer awareness has been shifted to functional foods due to their multiple health benefits. Probiotics can be found in a variety of fermented dairy, cereals, grains, fruits, vegetables, and meat products. The incorporation of probiotics and other functional ingredients holds the promise to improve gut health and to treat various gastrointestinal disorders, which include diarrhea, gastroenteritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and regulation of blood pressure, thus establishing an equitable microbial habitat. This review provides an overview of the key factors to consider for the selection of a suitable probiotic strain and its mechanism of action. Consequently, the article comprehensively reviews the health benefits of functional foods based on dairy and non-dairy sources that can boost mental health and general well-being. It also emphasizes the challenges the food industries face in incorporating probiotics in food products. Furthermore, this article delves into the constraints and promising lines of inquiry in the area of developing novel functional foods. Though probiotic research is still in the early phases, a significant amount of evidence is emerging to support their positive health effects.
