Therapeutic Potential of Saffron and Its Bioactive Constituents in Prostate Cancer: a Narrative Review

چکیده

Prostate cancer represents a major public health challenge, affecting millions of people worldwide. It is crucial to identify effective methods for treating prostate cancer to reduce its morbidity and mortality. Saffron is a natural product derived from the stigmas of Crocus sativus. Saffron and its constituents, including crocin, crocetin, safranal, and picrocrocin, exhibit significant anticancer potential, as demonstrated by various studies, and have shown promising anticancer effects in preclinical models of various cancers, including skin, colon, leukemia, lung, and breast cancers. In this study, we focused on reviewing the latest research on the therapeutic effects of saffron and its constituents in the treatment of prostate cancer. The databases Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were systematically searched using keywords like anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, along with saffron, its bioactive constituents, and prostate cancer from 1990 to 2025. According to our findings, saffron may influence various signaling pathways that impact tumor metabolism, cell death, cell cycle arrest, and host immune responses. Through these mechanisms, saffron can disrupt the survival and progression of prostate cancer cells, thereby representing a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of prostate cancer.
