Global Publication Productivity and Research Trends on Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Over the Last 20 Years: A Bibliometric Study

Background and Objectives: Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has become an important treatment for peritoneal surface malignancies, with rapidly growing research output. However, comprehensive analyses of global trends and collaborations remain limited. Therefore, this bibliometric study evaluated research trends, international collaborations, leading authors and institutions, research fields, and keyword patterns in HIPEC-related literature from 2005 to 2025. Methods: Data obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database were analyzed using VOSviewer and Scimago Graphica software. This study was limited to publications between 2005 and 2025, and only original research articles were included to ensure the reliability, consistency, and scientific quality of the bibliometric analysis. 3,342 publications were analyzed. Results: Publications related to HIPEC were predominantly concentrated in the fields of oncology, surgery, and gastroenterology-hepatology. The United States had the highest number of publications (n = 909) and citations (n = 20,337), with Turkey ranking 14th with 86 publications. Annals of Surgical Oncology was identified as the most productive journal, and Glehen O, Deraco M, and Sugarbaker PH were the most influential authors. The publication with the highest number of citations was published by Van Driel (2018). A keyword analysis identified “cytoreductive surgery” and “HIPEC” as the most frequently used terms. Conclusion: This analysis revealed a publication pattern in the HIPEC field over the past 20 years, characterized by growth in publications, increased international collaboration, and methodological complexity. Emerging "hot spots" highlight promising innovations. Research in this area is multidisciplinary and increasingly oriented toward personalized medicine. By identifying knowledge clusters and research hotspots, this study serves as a reference for future scientific research and resource planning in this field.
