Innovative Treatment for Femoral Neck Stress Fracture in a Female Runner: A Case Report

The purpose of this case report was to outline an innovative treatment approach that combines hyperbaric oxygen therapy with extracorporeal magneto-transduction therapy in a female runner diagnosed with a femoral neck stress fracture. A 33-year-old woman visited a physical therapy clinic with complaints of right hip pain that started while she was running. She described sharp and constant pain in the groin, rating it a 5 out of 10 on the visual scale. The physical therapist observed an antalgic gait and a non-capsular pattern of hip motion limitation.  At the end range of motion (ROM) for hip abduction, external rotation, and flexion, there was an empty end feel. There was significant tenderness to palpation over the anterior hip region. Although the radiographs of the hip appeared normal, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed a diagnosis of a femoral neck stress fracture. The patient was placed on a six-week non-weight-bearing protocol using crutches. She underwent hyperbaric oxygen therapy for one hour, three times a week over 14 days. This was followed by magnetic therapy three times a week for one month, which was then reduced to twice a week for an additional two weeks. At the six-week reevaluation, the patient reported no groin pain (0/10) and demonstrated a full, pain-free ROM in the hip joint. An MRI confirmed the complete resolution of the femoral neck stress fracture. This case demonstrates the successful use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and extracorporeal magneto-transduction therapy in treating a femoral neck stress fracture. These advanced treatments can accelerate healing and enhance recovery in active individuals.
