Social, economic and demographic factors affecting the occurrence of death in patients with COVID-19

Background and Objectives: COVID-19, as an emerging infection, is the most important global health challenge affecting the rate and trend of death. This study aimed to examine the social, economic and demographic factors affecting the occurrence of death in patients with COVID-19 in Ahvaz city.   Methods: This cross-sectional research employed a secondary analysis of 153,358 confirmed cases of COVID-19, wherein a questionnaire developed by the researcher is utilized to gather data. The focus of the study revolves around patients afflicted with COVID-19 and the fatalities attributed to COVID-19.   Results: : It was found that 56.9% of deaths were male and 43.1% were female. The most cases of death (40.3%) were in the age group of 61-75 years. Marital status with an odds ratio of 2.4 (P=0.001), underlying disease with an odds ratio of 1.4 (P=0.001), history of contracting with the infected person and attendance at various ceremonies with an odds ratio of 1.47(P=0.001), and TV and satellite as a source of knowledge with an odds ratio of 1.5 (P=0.001) had a significant relationship with the occurrence of death following COVID-19. Education (P=0.983), income (P=0.771), gender (P=0.308), and place of residence (P=0.281) did not affect the mortality caused by COVID-19. Age was one of the most important factor in predicting mortality with a P value of 0.001 in which 30-60 years’ group had about 7 times more likelihood to be expired following COVID-19.   Conclusion: Due to the existence of a significant relationship between elderly people and underlying diseases with deaths caused by COVID-19, special attention should be paid to their treatment and follow-up, and people should limit their contact and presence in the community. The readiness of health systems for prediction, prevention, timely diagnosis and appropriate response to the needs of crisis management caused by the epidemic of emerging diseases is crucial.
