Mental Wellbeing of Frontline Nurses during COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Perspective

Background and Objectives: In the Covid-19 pandemic, frontline nurses are extremely at risk due to the pandemic's threats to their physical and mental health. Frontline nurses experienced higher levels of mental distress because they had direct contact with COVID-19 patients. This qualitative study aimed to explore strategies that helped frontline nurses promote their mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.    Methods: Nineteen nurses working in the COVID-19 emergency department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University between September 2020 and August 2022 were selected and invited to participate in semi-structured and individual interviews. Data were analyzed using a content analysis approach to develop categories and subcategories.    Results: The research main categories were "smart self-care" consist of four sub-categories consist of "self-calmness,” "resilience,” "physical activity,” and "sufficient awareness and knowledge about COVID-19,” and "effective organizational support" consist of five sub-categories consist of "enhanced personal protective equipment,” "provision of psychiatric services to alleviate distress,” "peer support,” "workload management,” and "employee reward systems”.    Conclusion: Working in the frontline care units of COVID-19 and constant exposure to COVID-19 patients increases the risk of mental burden on nurses. The two main strategies that helped frontline nurses to promote their mental well-being were smart self-care and effective organizational support. Simultaneous attention to both these strategies can bring a significant solution to improve the mental health of nurses in the face of pandemics.
