The targeting of medical facilities has remained a significant issue in armed conflicts over recent decades. The frequency of such attacks has notably escalated in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. On October 9, 2024, during the latest incident, Israeli troops launched an assault on a field hospital operated by the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran, situated at the Syria-Lebanon border, along with its medical supply storage facility. This attack reduced the hospital to ashes, leading to its complete destruction, along with several ambulances and the total loss of medical supplies. It is essential to commence criminal proceedings against those accountable for violations of International Humanitarian Law to enhance adherence to the regulations governing armed conflict. Attacks on healthcare facilities rarely lead to prosecution, and legal actions against alleged offenders are uncommon. The international community should consider alternative accountability mechanisms to eliminate impunity for individuals responsible for these acts.
