Outcomes of surgical resection of cardiac myxoma—a 10-year experience

This study reports the clinical outcomes over a 10-year period following surgical removal of cardiac myxomas. A retrospective multicenter review was conducted on the medical records of 104 patients diagnosed with cardi-ac myxoma who underwent tumor resection. Preoperative echocardiog-raphy was used to assess tumor characteristics, ejection fraction, and valve involvement, while perioperative data included the surgical approach, by-pass duration, cross-clamp time, and lowest recorded temperature. The mean patient age was 52.6 ± 10.5 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:3. Most tumors (67.3%) were located in the fossa ovalis of the left atrium. Dyspnea was the most common presenting symptom (78.8%). At early fol-low-up, most patients demonstrated good left ventricular function and symptomatic improvement. Over a three-year follow-up period, the recur-rence rate was 1.9% and the mortality rate was 4.8%, indicating favorable long-term outcomes after surgical resection of cardiac myxomas. These re-sults indicate that surgical removal of cardiac myxomas offers favorable long-term outcomes with low recurrence and acceptable mortality rate.
