Efficacy and Safety of Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) Compared to Traditional Glaucoma Surgeries

Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve damaged by factors such as increased intraocular pressure, or eye pressure for short. Since the optic nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain, its damage gradually causes visual field defects. If the disease is untreated and progresses, it can eventually lead to complete blindness. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) compared to traditional glaucoma surgeries. 39 published articles from 2010 to 2025 were evaluated using keywords including "Medicinal Chemistry", "Nanoparticles", “Tissue Engineering”, “Targeted Drug Release”, and “Cancer” in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases. The results of the present study showed that initially, people with glaucoma begin to lose their peripheral vision. If left untreated, vision loss converges toward the center of the person's visual field. The next important risk factor is family history. It has been determined that people whose first-degree relatives have glaucoma are up to 10 times more likely to develop the condition than the normal population. In terms of epidemiology and prevalence studies, various studies in the world have reported a disease rate of about three percent. In some places, about one and a half percent have been reported, while in others, about five percent. However, an average of three percent has been observed in the normal population where glaucoma occurs. The minimally invasive nature of these techniques also ensures a shorter recovery period and less downtime, allowing patients to return to work and other daily activities within a few days. Patients are also significantly less likely to experience side effects associated with glaucoma surgeries. These potential side effects are generally minor and short-lived.
