Comparison of Naproxen and Gelofen for Postoperative Pain Management after Surgical Extraction of Impacted Mandibular Third Molars: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Pain following impacted wisdom tooth surgery is a common issue for patients and dentists. Studies show NSAIDs can be effective in managing post-surgical pain. This study aims to compare the effects of Gelofen and Naproxen on pain relief after wisdom tooth extraction. A crossover, unilateral study was conducted with 60 patients from the Ahvaz Jundishapur Dental Surgery Department (2020-2021). Participants, aged 16-30 years, were divided into two groups: one receiving Gelofen and the other receiving Naproxen, both undergoing bilateral wisdom tooth extraction. The mean age was 24.88 ± 5.62 years in the Naproxen group and 23.18 ± 5.48 years in the Gelofen group, with no significant difference (p = 0.103). The onset of pain relief occurred at 22.8 minutes for Gelofen and 18.6 minutes for Naproxen. Gelofen provided pain relief for 5.5 hours, significantly longer than the 3.03 hours for Naproxen (p < 0.001). The Gelofen group also reported significantly greater pain relief between 2-8 hours (p < 0.05). Side effects were reported in 65% of participants, with a higher rate in the Gelofen group (40%) compared to Naproxen (25%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.10). Gelofen provided superior pain relief compared to Naproxen, with a significantly longer duration of effect (p < 0.001). However, Gelofen also resulted in a higher incidence of side effects, although this difference was not statistically significant.
