The Efficacy of Cymbopogon nardus (Citronella) Leaf Extract Biolarvicide on the Mortality of Third Instar Larvae of Malaria Vector

Anopheles sp., as vectors of malaria, continue to pose a significant global health challenge. Controlling the population of Anopheles sp. larvae using biolarvicides is considered more environmentally friendly compared to synthetic larvicides. This study assesses the efficacy of biolarvicide derived from Cymbopogon nardus leaf extract on the mortality rates of third-instar larvae of the malaria vector. Employing a true experimental design with a randomized block design (RBD) framework, this study focused on third-instar larvae of Anopheles sp., cultured from naturally sourced eggs, with a total sample of 600 larvae. Each experimental group, representing concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, contained 25 larvae with four replicates per group. Larvae mortality was recorded after 24 hours. The data were analyzed using Probit analysis, One-way ANOVA, and the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test, with a significance threshold set at α = 5%. The application of Cymbopogon nardus leaf extract at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% resulted in larval mortality ranging from 15% to 95%. Probit analysis indicated an LC50 value of 10.018%. There was a significant difference in mortality rates among different concentrations of the leaf extract (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Cymbopogon nardus leaf extract biolarvicide is effective in inducing mortality in Anopheles larvae, thereby offering a viable method for controlling the malaria vector population.
