This paper presents an analysis of the political discourse in the context of the UN General Assembly in the backdrop of the circumstances that were caused by the release of the trailer of a Hollywood film entitled The Innocence of Muslims. The research focused on the debate of whether the video is an instance of the expression of freedom or something to target religious emotions and analyzed the discourse to examine the binary of power relations in the context of the divide between the religious freedom and freedom of expression. The objective of the research is to analyze the discursive strategies of the political actors used by them to construct certain ideologies and suppress others through discourse representations. The theoretical foundation of the research intertextual analysis suggested by Fairclough (1992a). The study finds that political actors expose their position and hegemonic relations through discourse representations. They attempt to reconstruct the ideologies to sustain power relations and manipulate the other’s point of view. Discourse representations from already established texts are chosen to enhance the effect of the discourse and win the consent of the audience.
