Eco-friendly Synthesis of ZnO NPs Using Date seed: A Sustainable Approach for the Treatment of Produced Water from the Siba Oilfield

This study presents an eco-friendly approach for synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using date seed extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent. The biosynthesis of ZnO NPs was confirmed by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), while their structural and morphological features were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). FTIR analysis revealed functional groups responsible for nanoparticle stabilization. The synthesized ZnO NPs were applied for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from contaminated water collected from the Siba field in Basra, Iraq, via an adsorption process. The COD removal efficiency was influenced by pH, nanoparticle dosage, and contact time, with optimal performance (90% removal) achieved at pH 8, dosage 10 g/L, and contact time 120 min. The results demonstrate that ZnO NPs synthesized from biowaste offer a sustainable and effective method for wastewater treatment, contributing to waste valorization and environmental protection.
