Evaluation of Electrocoagulation Effectiveness for Lead Removal in Lead Refining Effluent

This work aimed to evaluate the electrocoagulation technique as an optimal technology for the treatment of industrial wastewater from a lead recycling plant. The electrocoagulation was used for wastewater treatment from a lead recycling plant by two types of electrodes, iron and aluminum. Accordingly, initial pH, electrocoagulation time and electrical current density, and electrical conductivity were used as operating variables. The optimum operating conditions for each electrode were validated by conducting several tests. It was found that the best conditions for achieving the limit set by the Algerian standard were to use iron electrodes with an electrocoagulation time of 21 minutes, an initial pH of 8.59, an inter-electrode distance of 1 cm and an electrical current density of 47.6 A m-2. These conditions resulted in 100% lead removal with a final pH of 8.21.
