Bioremediative Potential of Native Pseudomonas Strains from the Ecuadorian Amazon for the Treatment of Contaminated Waters

The parish of Siete de Julio in Sucumbíos, Ecuador, experiences severe water contamination in the Aguarico River due to oil extraction activities, posing significant environmental and public health risks. This study aimed to evaluate the bioremediative potential of native Pseudomonas strains to reduce pollutant levels in contaminated river water. Laboratory experiments were conducted in two phases using a Completely Randomized Block Design, with treatments involving the presence or absence of bacterial inoculum, and each treatment was replicated. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post-hoc test at a 5% significance level. The application of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at a concentration of 495 CFU under agitation speeds of 120 and 150 rpm significantly reduced pollutant concentrations. However, higher bacterial concentrations (990 CFU) resulted in decreased efficiency, with contaminant levels exceeding those of the control, possibly due to oxygen depletion or microbial stress. These findings suggest that field application of native Pseudomonas strains could serve as an effective, eco-friendly, and scalable strategy for remediating oil-contaminated water in Siete de Julio and similar regions.
