A simple and mild procedure, which takes only a short time at room temperature and gives a high yield for conversion of alcohols to alkyl iodides using silica iodide as a new heterogeneous reagent is described. Silica-iodide is synthesized from the reaction between silica gel, triphenylphosphine, and iodine in dichloromethane solvent. The amount of iodide loaded on silica gel is 0.5 mmol/g. The conversion of alcohols to the corresponding alkyl iodides is carried out in 5 minutes at room temperature with a yields between 12-99%.
