The role of new fuel deposits in the North and East of the Arctic Zone remains underestimated in the modern Russian economy. All attention is focused on large projects of energy mineral resources of oil and gas in the context of "national projects". However, the potential for the development of coal mining in the Arctic with its unique potential of the highest possible standard of coal and anthracite can create an irreversible process of structural changes in the energy balance of the North. Therefore, when building a modern approach to the issues of transport corridors and planned sea transportation along the Northern Sea Route, one should agree with the paradigm of today that overcoming the heterogeneity of the economic space of the Arctic coastal territories depends on logistical and environmental constraints. The article also notes the problems of sea transportation of coal along the Northern Sea Route, the peculiarities of icebreaker support, the shortage of icebreaker fleet and ice-class vessels, and the need to update port facilities. Highlighting the environmental aspect of newly developed deposits in the Arctic Zone as a necessity in the transition to an innovative development path, it is proposed to use an environmentally responsible business model.
