Association Between Clinical-Demographic Factors and Sleep Quality in Polycystic Ovary Women

Background & Objective: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder in reproductive-age women, associated with hormonal, metabolic, and psychological complications. Sleep disturbances are increasingly recognized as a comorbidity in PCOS, yet their association with clinical-demographic factors remains underexplored. This study was conducted with aim to assess the relationship between sleep quality and various clinical-demographic variables in women diagnosed with PCOS. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Al-Kadhomiya Teaching Hospital. A total of 296 women with confirmed PCOS based on the Rotterdam criteria were enrolled. Participants completed a structured questionnaire capturing sociodemographic and clinical details, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. A PSQI score >5 indicated poor sleep. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 25) and chi-square tests. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Poor sleep quality was reported in the majority of participants, particularly among those aged ≥35 years (82.4%), those with children (77.9%), and divorced individuals (92.3%). Sleep duration significantly impacted sleep quality, with 6-7 hours yielding the best outcomes (37.5% good sleep). No significant associations were observed between sleep quality and BMI or age of menarche (P>0.05). Conclusion: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among women with PCOS, influenced significantly by age, marital status, parental responsibilities, and sleep duration. These findings highlight the need to incorporate sleep health into comprehensive PCOS management strategies, emphasizing behavioral and psychosocial support alongside medical care.
