The Effect of Human Papillomavirus in Sperm Quality and Morphology: A Meta-Analysis

Background & Objective: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexual contact virus affecting mostly the squamous epithelium of the reproductive system. It belongs to the genus of DNA viruses. Recently, there have been indications that HPV may be linked to decreased fertility and changes in the outcomes of assisted reproductive technologies. The present study was conducted with aim to explore how sperm quality is affected by HPV infection.Materials & Methods: This study was conducted using a comprehensive search via the following search terms: (human papillomavirus OR HPV) AND Sperm AND quality in the Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. Thirteen of the 497 papers that were found satisfied with the criterion for inclusion in this study after duplicate studies were eliminated and screening was performed according to predetermined standards. Comprehensive meta-analysis was used for statistical analysis and graph display.Results: The asthenospermia was much more common in HPV-positive individuals than in virus-negative individuals. The sperm abnormalities were comparatively more prevalent in the HPV-positive groups than in the HPV-negative groups across all four countries-Brazil, Italy, Japan, and Korea.Conclusion: According to our research, HPV may not have a substantial effect on a variety of sperm analytical parameters. The sperm HPV is strongly linked to asthenospermia, but not to sperm concentration, semen volume, or shape. Furthermore, sperm parameters are protected by HPV immunization.
