Combination of N-Acetylcysteine and letrozole in Induction of Ovulation for Infertile Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Background & Objective: Ovulation induction is considered the primary treatment for PCOS-related infertility. Clomiphene Citrate (CC) has usually been employed as the first-line medication, although letrozole has recently gained favor due to its improved efficacy in inducing ovulation. To assess the combination of N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) and letrozole in the induction of ovulation and the success of pregnancy for infertile polycystic ovarian syndrome patients.Materials & Methods: A double-blind random clinical trial was conducted in Babylon Governorate between 2023 and 2024, in which all patients referred to our hospital suffered from PCOS.Results: The size of the follicle in patients treated with letrozole + NAC was (16.6±3.3) mm, which was significantly larger than that (15.1±3.9) mm in group B (i.e., those treated by letrozole + placebo) (P=0.004). The induction of ovulation was probably considered in 31 (32.3%) of patients in group A, while it was found in 15 (15.6%) of patients in group B with a significant difference (P=0.006). Pregnancy success was significantly higher (P=0.029) in group A than in group B (17 vs. 7), respectively.Conclusion: Adding N-acetylcysteine to letrozole increased the induction of ovulation and success of pregnancy for infertile polycystic ovarian syndrome patients.
