Supporting Keggin Type Heteropolyacids on Polyaniline: The Effect of Metal and Heteroatoms on Catalytic Epoxidation of Alkenes

Poly-aniline was directly used to support Keggin type Hm+nXm+M12-nVnO40 (X=Si4+, M=Mo, n=0; X=P3+, M=Mo, n=0-2; X=P3+, M=W, n=2) heteropolyacids. After characterization of these catalysts by FT-IR, PXRD, TG/DTA, ICP, and SEM/EDS techniques, they were applied to the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene. The progress of the reactions was investigated using gas-liquid chromatography, and the catalytic procedures were optimized for the parameters involved, including the solvent and oxidant. The effect of X, M, and vanadium content of the supported heteropolyacids was investigated. Recycling experiments revealed that these nanocatalysts could be repeatedly applied up to four times for a nearly complete epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene. The optimized experimental conditions were also applied to the epoxidation of other alkenes, including cyclohexene, styrene, and α-methyl styrene.
