Some New Zn(II) and Hg(II) Bromoimidazolidine Schiff Base Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, DFT/NBO Investigation, Antimicrobial Activity and Thermal Behavior

In this paper, we describe the synthesis of new four-coordinate complexes obtained through the reaction of (2-bromo-benzylidene)-{2-[2-(2-bromo-phenyl)-imidazolidine-1-yl]-ethyl}-amine (L) with Zn(II) and Hg(II) halide salts. The structures of these complexes were characterized using various techniques, including ¹H and ¹³C NMR, FT-IR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, molar conductance measurements, and thermal analysis. Additionally, some complexes were synthesized at the nanoscale through a sonochemical process and analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ligand and its complexes were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against selected bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, the DNA cleaving potential of the ligand and its metal complexes was assessed using the agarose gel electrophoresis method, revealing significant activity of the zinc complexes compared to other compounds. Finally, the molecular geometry, natural electron configurations, and reactivity of all complexes were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT).
