Two new centrosymmetric binuclear mercury(II) complexes of [{HgCl(L4-py-1-naph)}2(μ-Cl)2] (1) and [{HgBr(L4-py-1-naph)}2(μ-Br)2] (2) were prepared from the reactions of HgX2 (X is Cl in 1 and Br in 2) with N-(naphthalen-1-yl)isonicotinamide (L4-py-1-naph) ligand in methanol. Suitable crystals of these complexes for crystal structure determination were obtained by methanol diffusion to the colorless solution in DMSO. Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C{1H}-NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that both complexes have a centrosymmetric binuclear structure, in which the mercury atoms have a five-coordinated in a distorted square-pyramidal configuration. Furthermore, in both complexes, intermolecular N-H•••O and C-H•••O hydrogen bonds and π•••π interactions are effective to stabilization of these complexes in the crystal packing.
