Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohols with Hydrogen Peroxide Catalyzed by Nickel(II) Unsymmetrical Salen Complex Supported on Boehmite Nanoparticles

Here, we studied the ability of a nickel(II) unsymmetrical salen complex, Ni(salenac-OH), where salenac-OH = [9-(2',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-5,8-diaza-4-methylnona-2,4,8-trienato](-2), immobilized on the surface of boehmite nanoparticles, in the oxidation of benzyl alcohols using 30% H2O2 as a green oxidant at room temperature. This heterogeneous Boehmite@Ni(salenac-OH) nanocatalyst exhibited high selectivity and activity in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol derivatives, producing the equivalent benzaldehydes in good to excellent yields without over-oxidation to unwanted by-products. Furthermore, the Boehmite@Ni(salenac-OH) catalyst can be recycled through simple filtration and used four times without losing its catalytic activity.
