The proposed study presents the design and development of a rapid and selective naked-eye colorimetric assay system for two essential species, silver ion (Ag+) and amino acid L-arginine (Arg) using Bromopyrogallol red (BPR). This commercial dye is readily available in high purity and was first designed as a colorimetric probe for detecting and determining silver ions and Arg. In the first step, BPR was used to measure silver ions by gradually adding Ag+ to BPR in 10.0 mmol L-1 EtOH/HEPES buffer, pH 7.0 (1:4 v/v). Also, the formed complex (BPR-Ag) was used as a chemical receptor for the colorimetric determination of Arg. The reported procedure gave detection limits of 0.8µmol L-1 and 0.09µmol L-1 for Ag+ and arginine, with repeatability and intermediate precision for the determination of arginine in the range of (2.5-3.8)% and (2.9-4.5)%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully used to rapidly detect and monitor arginine in pharmaceutical formulations (dietary supplement products). According to the results, binary logic gates (IMPLICATION and INHIBIT) can detect analytes in real samples with the order of inputs. This chemosensor also functioned as a molecular "keyboard lock" by correctly sequentially adding Ag+ and Arg inputs.
