A Review of Red Palm Oil in Anti-Ageing Cosmetics: Composition, Mechanisms, Formulation Challenges, and Nanotechnology Applications

چکیده

Red palm oil is a natural bioactive that can be used as an anti-aging in cosmetic preparations. This review aimed to investigate the anti-aging properties of red palm oil and its formulations, especially in the form of nanotechnology. This narrative review was conducted by performing a systematic literature search across PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies published between 2010 and 2025. Using the PRISMA framework for the screening process, a total of 88 relevant articles were selected based on their focus on red palm oil composition, anti-ageing molecular mechanisms, and nanotechnology-based delivery systems. Red palm oil has been widely studied for its content of phytonutrients, including fatty acids, vitamin E (tocotrienol and tocopherol), carotenoids (beta-carotene), phytosterols, squalene, and coenzyme Q10. Although the potential of red palm oil in increasing skin moisture has been studied, its use as an anti-aging agent remains largely unexplored. The phytonutrient content in red palm oil has shown anti-aging effects by inhibiting hyperpigmentation, enzymes collagenase and elastase, and improving the skin barrier and moisture. The anti-aging effectiveness of red palm oil is also strongly supported by the development of optimal preparations. Developing red palm oil as a cosmetic product presents challenges due to its low solubility, the instability of its phytonutrient content, and its barrier to the skin's stratum corneum. Nanotechnology has improved red palm oil's solubility, stability, and penetration. In summary, red palm oil is a promising for future anti-aging cosmetics, as it integrates natural bioactives with advanced delivery systems.
