Phytochemicals and Vitamins in the Management of Virus-Induced Liver Failure: A Review of Clinical Evidence and Promising Preclinical Candidates

The liver is directly and indirectly susceptible to damage during viral infections, and evidence from viral pandemics highlights the importance of protecting this vital organ to reduce mortality. Given that many drugs currently available on the market are derived from natural sources, investigating the clinical effects of phytochemicals and vitamins represents an important step toward the discovery of new therapeutic agents. This review aimed to evaluate the clinical evidence regarding the role of phytochemicals and vitamins in the management of virus-induced liver failure and to highlight promising preclinical phytochemicals with potential therapeutic value. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect to identify relevant studies published up to February 2026 using combinations of related keywords. Non-relevant articles, non-English publications, and letters to the editor were excluded. Heterogeneous evaluation criteria limit direct comparison among studies. However, certain phytochemicals such as glycyrrhizin, matrine, and oxymatrine have demonstrated therapeutic potential in viral hepatitis and liver dysfunction. Furthermore, based on preclinical evidence, some phytochemicals such as curcumin are considered valuable natural candidates for future clinical studies. In addition, Vitamin D has shown benefits in viral hepatitis and COVID-19, warranting further clinical investigation in other virus-induced liver diseases. Existing clinical evidence supports the potential role of certain phytochemicals and vitamins in the management of virus-induced liver dysfunction. In parallel, certain phytochemicals with encouraging preclinical results may represent promising candidates for future clinical research. Additional well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish their therapeutic value.
