Troubleshooting of an Air-Cooler in Hot Climates Using Air Precooling

Air coolers have been used extensively in industrial operations. One of the common problems in summer seasons, especially in areas with warm climates, is the loss of the air coolers' performance. This research tackles troubleshooting and improving air coolers (E-701 and E-702) of a gas condensate stabilization unit by utilizing cold water and propane streams to enhance cooling efficiency. Simulations were conducted on HTRI software to study the impact of pre-cooling the inlet air with these streams. The findings indicate that by reducing the inlet air temperature from 50 °C to 40 °C with cold water (10 °C, 2 barg) or propane (-2 °C, 3 barg), active fans can be minimized by 50% without affecting process cooling requirements. Cold water proved superior, which entailed lower piping and capital costs than propane ones, with lower operational hazards too. Precooling the inlet air from 50 °C to 40 °C reduced fan electrical demand by approximately 55–60%. Research indicates that utilizing a pre-cooling cold-water system represents an economic, safer method in ensuring maximum efficiency for air coolers in a tropical environment through huge energy cost savings and superior operating reliability.
