Energy Saving Impact of an Inclined Solar Balcony in a Residential Building

This paper examines the energy-saving potential of inclined solar balconies integrated into a two-story residential building in Tianjin, China. Using EnergyPlus software for simulations, the study evaluates the impact of varying solar panel tilt angles, from 0 to 90 degrees in 10-degree increments, on the building's monthly and annual electricity consumption and solar electricity production. The total electricity consumption is largely unaffected by panel angle, as it is dominated by heating and cooling loads driven by ambient temperature and occupant behavior. In contrast, solar energy production is highly sensitive to tilt angles, with optimal performance typically occurring near the site's latitude. It is found that an adjustable-angle solar balcony system maximizes annual energy yield, thereby reducing environmental impact.
