Investigation on the Effect of Frying-Induced Oil Deterioration on Sunflower-Based Biodiesel Quality

The increasing demand for energy and environmental concerns have heightened research on alternative renewable fuels. The study investigates the potential of biodiesel derived from SunFlower Oil Raw (SFOR) to reduce reliance on fossil fuels amidst rising energy demands and environmental concerns. Using SunFlower Oil Raw (SFOR) fried with various foods, the physicochemical properties of the fried oil were analyzed against those of fresh SFOR. Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) results showed compositional shifts in triglycerides and fatty acid esters due to frying. The deep-fried oils were converted to biodiesel through alkali transesterification, achieving biodiesel yields above 94%. The analysis revealed that thermally degraded oils can still serve as viable biodiesel feedstocks, confirming the efficacy of transesterification in converting waste frying oils into renewable fuel. The results showed that food type significantly influenced oil degradation, increasing FFA, viscosity, and moisture while reducing calorific value.
