This study assesses the energy consumption of a five-story building situated in a hot and dry climate using DesignBuilder simulation software, which is integrated with the advanced EnergyPlus engine. The research focuses on optimizing energy performance by examining three principal passive design strategies: the installation of horizontal awnings above exterior windows, the replacement of single-glazed windows with double-glazed units, and the addition of an insulation layer to the exterior walls. Results indicate that each intervention independently reduces the building’s heat load and energy consumption, with annual savings ranging from approximately 12% (exterior wall insulation) to over 34% (double-glazed windows). The combined application of these strategies demonstrates synergistic effects, achieving energy savings of up to 55.7% in certain months. Furthermore, improvements in indoor comfort, temperature uniformity, and natural ventilation are observed as a result of enhanced thermal resistance and solar shading. This research confirms the critical role of architectural design variables in driving energy efficiency in buildings and provides practical guidance for optimizing building envelopes in similar climatic contexts.
