Removal of Antibiotic Drugs from Aqueous Phase Using Advanced Magnetic Nanomaterials

Antibiotics are commonly employed to combat bacterial infections, but their excessive use, misuse and limitations often result in aggregation and bio-transformation in aqueous systems. This has resulted in a phenomenon known as bacterial antibiotic resistance, and can cause detrimental effects such as the rise of multi-resistant bacterial genes contributing to increased survival rates of the bacteria, and hindering the treatment of patients. The most impactful approach to controlling water pollution due to antibiotics is by preventing their release in the first place. Various treatment strategies have been explored for the purpose of finding solutions to the rising dangers of antibiotic contamination of purified water and natural waters. Photocatalytic degradation was found as a very efficient treatment option. The central aim of this research was the investigation of the absorption of antibiotics via magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and to outline prospective research requirements and challenges. The possible approaches for the removal of antibiotic pollutants have been discussed accordingly. This review specifically focuses on the numerous approaches of photocatalytic degradation by nanomaterials. In order to materialize the MNPs full potential at grand scale applications, allocating greater attempts is proposed.
