Strategic Rinsing in Layer-by-Layer Assembly: Boosting the Performance of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Nanofiltration Membranes

PolyElectrolyte Multilayer (PEM) membranes have gained increasing attention in NanoFiltration (NF) applications due to their robustness and versatility. In this study, we demonstrate how the properties of PEMs—specifically those composed of poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDAC) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)—can be tuned by introducing different rinsing procedures during membrane fabrication. Four rinsing modes were evaluated: no rinsing after deposition (NR), rinsing after polycation deposition only (RPC), rinsing after polyanion deposition only (RPA), and complete rinsing after each layer deposition (CR). The results reveal that partial rinsing (RPC, RPA, or CR) yields significantly higher salt rejection than NR. The best performance was obtained with RPA prepared in 0.1 M NaCl-containing solution, showing 98.2% rejection of MgCl₂ and a permeability of 0.76 L/m²·h·bar under test conditions of 573.73 ± 12.54 ppm MgCl₂ at 32 °C.
